Old Time Music
The Oakley Briarpickers is an Old Time band based in Freehold, NJ. Richard Smith and Denise Warren founded the band in 2019 to be just a bit different than the bluegrass bands in the area.
Old Time Music is fiddle tunes, reels, waltzes, Civil War era songs, square and contra dance tunes, old mountain songs. Old Time was the roots of bluegrass and country, and some of the tunes have been around since the 1600’s. We strongly believe in this music, and the community traditions around it.
While Richard and Denise are the base of the band, many other players join in depending on the need and venue. We’ve had fiddles, guitars, banjoes, and dulcimers on stage with us.
The Oakley Briarpickers play for festivals, dances, private events, and fundraisers. Some of the places where we’ve played include Albert Music Hall in Waretown, the Forestry Festival in Jackson, and Christmas at Camp (Civil War Reenactment Event) at the Oakley Historic Farm and Museum.
Richard and Denise host a monthly Old Time Jam at the Oakley Historic Farm and Museum and another at BOTMA (Bluegrass and Old-Time Music Association of New Jersey).
